May-June
10, 2007
Well anglers we finally launched for the season in early May and have been
fishing hard ever since. The water temperature in early May was quite cool ; a
chilly 46 degrees. We started the season fluke fishing which is a favorite with
many of our clients. As most of you know, fluke are large flounder some reaching
up to 10 -15 lbs. These monsters are nicknamed doormats because of their size.
This year was a real surprise. On our first trip out, we landed dozens of large
fluke. The bite picked up as the water temperature warmed and great schools of
squid entered the bay. According to our archives, this has been the best fluking
in 23 years. On one morning trip, our guest landed 45 pounds of large and jumbo
fluke in three hours. The afternoon trip was nearly as successful. The bite has
slowed but it is still good. The water temperature on
oceanside today (June 10th) was 56 degrees. We started bass fishing around
the full moon and had good results. A few weeks ago, our guests landed 10
schoolies (bass 20-30 inches long) and had a few keepers. These schoolies
provide quite a battle on 12 lbs. test line and ultra-light tackle.
Recently the bite has improved. Last weekend on one trip, our guests
landed and released 24 school bass. It was a great bite indeed.
Today in three hours we landed 18 bass and had five keepers. To our
surprise, we hooked into several ledgemonsters (huge ocean blues). They
had just completed their long migration north and were quite slender. They
will fatten up this summer up the bay. Well, that is all for now anglers
and its time to head out. All the best! Tight Lines,
Capt. Tim
